San Francisco Department of the Environment

O’Rorke has worked with the San Francisco Department of the Environment for over 20 years to promote their recycling and conservation programs. Recent efforts include the “Wonder” campaign promoting safe disposal of toxic items, and the popular “Blue Cart, Green Cart” television spots.

Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s Winter Spare the Air Campaigns

Since 2008, O'Rorke has worked with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to conduct educational outreach for their Winter Spare the Air Campaign, informing residents of the woodburning rule and the negative health impacts of wood smoke.

Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s Spare the Air Every Day Campaigns

O'Rorke has worked with the Air District to manage the ‘Spare the Air' Campaign for much of the past 10 years. Our approach for this client includes a combination of mainstream media elements and grassroots community outreach to bring the ‘Spare the Air' message to the Bay Area.

Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s Climate Action Leadership Summit

O'Rorke planned and executed the Bay Area Air Quality Management District's May 2009 Climate Action Leadership Summit, and secured NY Times foreign affairs columnist Thomas L. Friedman as the keynote speaker. Held at the newly renovated Fox Theatre in Oakland, the invitation-only event was attended by over 400 Bay Area community and government leaders.

Alternative Energy and Transportation Expo

In 2006, O'Rorke worked with the Alternative Energy and Transportation Expo providing media strategy and public relations services to promote the event. Press tactics included staging a “ride-and-drive” on the Santa Monica Pier, which generated significant local and national coverage. The following year, O'Rorke expanded our services to include event promotion, planning an opening night reception and securing sponsors.

Castaic Lake Water Agency

In 2007 O'Rorke was contracted by the Castaic Lake Water Agency to develop a strategic plan to help the agency further their goals. After a round of focus groups and extensive research, O'Rorke recommended implementing a public outreach campaign on water conservation to boost recognition for water issues in the Santa Clarita Valley. The program launched in May 2008 with television, print, radio, and outdoor advertising. The program is ongoing and has expanded to include targeted Hispanic outreach, a website overhaul and new campaign messaging in 2010. Since the 2007 launch, water consumption in the Santa Clarita Valley has reduced by 10 percent.

Capitol Corridor Joint Power Authority

To promote the Capitol Corridor Joint Power Authority's summer Kids Ride Free program, O'Rorke developed and launched a minisite and advertising campaign that incorporated print, online, station signage, and grassroots outreach. In 2010 the campaign was expanded to include outreach to Seniors.

San Francisco Department of Public Works

For Arbor Day 2009, the City of San Francisco planted 25,000 trees in the city. O'Rorke produced signage and collateral for related events, including a billboard, banners, postcards, and flyers.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission

In 2007, O'Rorke was tasked with executing the launch of SFGreasecycle, a program run by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) to collect fats, oil and grease to recycle into biofuel. O'Rorke also works with the SFPUC on a number of other programs, including the Big Blue Bucket community event and the Wastewater Master Plan.

City of Walnut Creek Litter Reduction Campaign

To help the City of Walnut Creek reduce cigarette butt litter in their downtown business district, O'Rorke developed a targeted local advertising campaign directing residents to use ash towers installed near local bars and restaurants to dispose of their cigarettes. Over the course of this month-long campaign, 800 people visited the Clean Water Program's page on the Walnut Creek website, and a total of 2,100 cigarette butts were collected in the ash towers.

Inland Empire Utilities Agency

In 2008 O'Rorke was tasked to develop a successful pilot program to motivate the diverse Inland Empire communities to disconnect their automatic water softener (AWS) and take advantage of the new rebate program. The program has prevented nearly four tons of salt per month from entering the regional sewer system, and has lead IEUA to work with O'Rorke on a potential future ban in the area.

Los Angeles County Property Assessed Clean Energy Program

In 2012, O'Rorke was hired by Los Angeles County to develop and manage communications and outreach for Los Angeles County's Commercial PACE program. O'Rorke was tasked with developing public outreach and training materials to educate and increase awareness about new financing options available to fund energy efficiency projects. O'Rorke contributes to strategy on targeting audiences; developing collateral—including multi-audience 1-sheets, banners and PowerPoint presentations—and led the re-design, development and implementation of lapace.org.

Marin County Department of Health and Human Services

For most of the past decade O'Rorke has worked with the Marin County Division of Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Programs to draw media attention to drug and alcohol-related issues impacting youth in Marin County. Efforts have included media relations, events, community outreach, and extensive research.

Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County

In 2004 O'Rorke launched a successful outreach campaign to reduce the number of automatic water softeners (AWS) in the Santa Clarita Valley by alerting residents to the harmful effects of their salty waste on the Santa Clara River. Over the course of five years, the program included a rebate program and an eventual ban on AWS usage. By the end of the project, O'Rorke's education campaign dramatically decreased the use of harmful softeners from one in five homes to one in 137—an impressive 97 percent.

Livermore Recycles

The Livermore Recycles program was developed through a partnership between the City of Livermore and Livermore Sanitation to ensure utilization of the three cart recycling program and to help the community reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill by 75 percent by 2015. O'Rorke recommended sustained residential outreach, particularly with regard to food scrap recycling and other blue bin recycling opportunities.

Zero Waste Palo Alto

O'Rorke is conducting outreach on behalf of Zero Waste Palo Alto to drive residents to meet the city's goal of Zero Waste by 2021. Recent efforts included a brochure that addresses recycling, disposal and reuse solutions for residents of multi-unit apartment complexes, a holiday themed effort that encouraged residents to consider alternatives to gift wrap, and utility bill inserts reminding residents to BYOBag when shopping.

Zero Waste Marin

Zero Waste Marin turned to O'Rorke in 2013 to conduct outreach to increase participation in waste reduction behaviors. Working with the JPA board, five different haulers as well as the County and a local task force, O'Rorke created a regional campaign focused on reducing food waste and increasing food scraps participation, with clear visuals showing which items are universally accepted into residents' green bins. In addition to running a traditional advertising campaign, O'Rorke also overhauled the Zero Waste Marin website home page, developed a new tagline and conducted extensive grassroots outreach to local schools, community groups and homeowner associations.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Works

In 2007, O'Rorke developed and implemented a water conservation program for the Los Angeles County Waterworks Districts. We developed a public education campaign providing Antelope Valley, Malibu and Marina del Rey residents and businesses with easy steps and solutions to reduce water usage. The results were impressive: residents have reduced water use by 24 percent since 2007, a decade ahead of the state's goal of 20 percent reduction by 2020.

Bay Area Air Quality Management District's Climate Protection Summit

For the Air District's 2006 Climate Protection Summit, O'Rorke secured keynote speaker Vice President Al Gore, in addition to planning and managing all aspects of the event. O'Rorke also secured several hundred thousand dollars in sponsorships from partners including PG&E, Lawrence Livermore Labs, and Sun Microsystems.

Connect, Redwood City!

In 2013, the San Mateo County Transit Authority tasked O'Rorke with developing and launching a pilot program called Connect, Redwood City! that offers various transportation options to help people with commute and ‘last mile' options and also encourages them to reduce single-occupancy driving and consequently, reduce greenhouse gas emissions. O'Rorke implemented a targeted advertising campaign, organized a launch event at the Redwood City Caltrain station and built a campaign centric website to promote the convenient, affordable, and stress-free travel options to Redwood City residents, visitors, and commuters.

Caltrans Bay Bridge Closures

In 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2013, O'Rorke provided strategy and executed media buying for the Caltrans Bay Bridge closures, negotiating significant bonuses on advertising space each year. Each campaign incorporated a mix of TV, radio, print, online, and movie theatre ads.

Bay Area Bike Share

In 2013, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) contracted with O'Rorke to support the launch of Bay Area Bike Share, a pilot bike sharing program developed in partnership with 10 different regional cities, counties and agencies. O'Rorke first worked with MTC, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and other regional partners to develop high visibility signage for the Bike Share station kiosks throughout the region. O'Rorke then planned, organized and managed the kick-off press event at the San Francisco Caltrain station on August 29, 2013. The event was an enormous success and received coverage from four key regional radio stations, four Bay Area broadcast TV stations, print and online coverage from 16 local publications and dozens of AP stories including key coverage on ABC National News.

Bay Area Pollution Prevention Group

O'Rorke completed a full design overhaul of the BayWise.org website in March of 2011, timing the launch to coincide with a Spring Cleaning themed online ad campaign which drove new visitors to the site.

Contra Costa Clean Water Program

In 2009 O'Rorke developed a comprehensive media campaign for Contra Costa County's Clean Water Program, which included TV, radio, online, outdoor, transit, out-of-home digital, and grassroots outreach. In concert, O'Rorke also developed and launched a new website, and planned and managed a kick-off press event.

Westside Cities Council of Governments

In 2011, O'Rorke began working with the Westside Cities Council of Governments to promote its Energize the Westside campaign to increase awareness of and participation in the Energy Upgrade California program. The program offers up to $8,000 in rebates and incentives to homeowners who make energy and water efficient improvements to their homes.
